Meet Bentley, the Bernese mountain dog who runs in Bryanston

Another opportunity to learn about a beautiful breed of dog that also exists in Sandton and surrounds.

It’s becoming apparent that dogs across Johannesburg North look forward to Saturdays, when they get to visit the park in Bryanston along the river where humans walk and run.

Bentley, the Bernese mountain dog, looked regal with his flowing coat, and white scarf draped around his neck.

His owner, Lew Campbell, shared the origin story of Bentley’s breed on June 15, as he reflected on how the pair came to be companions, shortly after their walk. Campbell said that the breed originated from near the county of Bern, in Switzerland, where they served humans in the mountains.

“They were used to pull the cart up, and take supplies to the houses up the hill to fetch milk and cheese, and bring it all down,” Campbell explained. “They grew big and strong in the front, with big paws to walk over snow. These are also very good rescue dogs. They use them in the mountains for rescuing people in avalanches, and finding people.”

Campbell adopted Bentley from a breeder in Johannesburg five years ago, and they’ve been companions ever since. He briefly concluded by recalling the process towards sourcing this breed in Johannesburg.

“We found him being bred by a lady: you put your name down, and then you hope to get a dog from the breed.”
