Dad’s car treat at Hyde Park Corner

Zebra Squared Gallery hosted Johannesburg fathers to a special exhibition of classic and supercars.

Young people and fathers were the main theme at Hyde Park Corner from June 15–17 where Zebra Squared Gallery hosted a special treat for dads.

Fathers across Johannesburg North had the opportunity to appreciate some of the world’s prettiest, fastest and rare cars over their Father’s Day weekend.

As a part of the event, Zebra Squared Gallery arranged an F1 race care simulator for enthusiasts to test their skills on. Operator Dante Fouche with Malebo Motsau behind the wheel.

The gallery showcased some of their impressive collection of cars to enthusiasts and novices alike, exhibiting brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche.

“We’ve probably got about 15 cars,” said Zebra Squared gallerist Klaus Grogor. “We’re trading in classic and modern supercars. We have a bit of everything here, mainly limited editions.”
“None of these are race cars, they’re all road-going cars,” he said. “The Porsches on display are not ours, they belong to collectors. We borrowed those for the Father’s Day display.”
Grogor dropped an anvil on this journalist’s dream to own one of these beautiful cars when he revealed their prices ranged from R220 000 to R12m.

“They go up in value all the time because you won’t get a new one – they don’t make them anymore. That’s why they are in demand. You can call it art, yes.”
Indeed, the cars on display were works of art. Leon Doubell, accompanied by his father, showed that he knew more about cars than this reporter.

“That’s an Aston Martin. I know there are three of its kind. That car, right there, costs R12m,” Leon said confidently. “Unfortunately, it doesn’t talk. But the V12 engine in it does. It’s got 480 horsepower and that makes it very fast.”

Fellow car enthusiast Sifiso Msane said he would certainly invest in classic and supercars based on their history.

“There is a collector’s world, and it’s quite big. When it comes to collecting, you have to understand and appreciate the history of the cars to buy a car that’s worth 10 times the value of a normal car on the road,” Msane explained. “I would make a purchase based on the history of the brand. If you look at cars like the AC Cobra or your 1967 Ford GT500 Mustang, those cars are very rare right now. They hold a lot of value in a collector’s world. It’s just about understanding why people collect.”
