Ward 91 faces persistent water and power outages

Ward 91 councillor hopes that they can overcome the challenges and build a stronger, more vibrant community if residents come together.

Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart has recently updated the community, detailing the changes and challenges that have marked the year’s first six months.

As the ward navigates the complexities of growth and development, the insights shared by Stewart offer a comprehensive look at what has been achieved and the obstacles that remain.

“Water and power outages have been the defining story of Ward 91 this year,” said Stewart.
Despite the setbacks, there was a momentary pause in load-shedding, offering a brief respite to residents. This pause came in the lead-up to the national elections, providing some temporary relief from the otherwise persistent disruptions.

“Projects-wise, the first phase of the Watt Street Project should be starting in Wynberg/Alex, after several contractor issues that have sabotaged the commencement of the venture.”
He added there would be a JRA project to install gabions to protect the banks of the Innes Free Park’s waterways, and the park should benefit from an injection of capital from a park adoption agreement before the end of the year.
“Sticking with the ward’s parks and green spaces, the Athol Security and Residents Association has partnered with residents and other community initiatives to erect Clearview fencing along green spaces near the M1 highway.”

Stewart emphasised this should reduce vagrancy and opportunistic household break-ins in the future.

“As much as I welcome the needed projects in the ward’s parks and green spaces, electricity and water infrastructure remain the critical areas that require the greatest focus and investment, with roads being a close second place.”

The councillor concluded by stating that his focus would remain on highlighting these most critical issues during the budget season to ensure that Ward 91 received the essentials, first and foremost.
