As a reward for her outstanding performance, Layla has been selected for the South African team that will travel to Japan in October.

She will represent the country at the JKA World Championships in Tokyo, where she will compete against some of the best young karatekas from around the globe.

According to Layla, it feels amazing to have earned SA colours for karate, and she feels super proud of herself.

“I started doing karate during Covid, and when I went to watch my brother’s class, I joined in and have loved it since.”

She added she always wanted to succeed in something that she enjoyed, and karate was that.

“I was incredibly nervous to start at the SA JKA National Championships but once I was with my friends from the dojo I was okay. My most memorable moment was getting onto the floor and doing my best.”

Layla mentioned that her sensei and mom were the ones who helped her reach this point in her karate journey.

“I am looking forward to representing the country, and I would like to travel to other championships, meet new karate champs along the way, and eventually get to black belt.
