Kirsten Kluyts Murder: A timeline of events

A closer look at the events surrounding the death of Parkmore resident Kirsten Kluyts.

The matter was postponed for further investigation until May 10. The case has been moved from Alexandra Magistrate’s Court and will be heard at the Johannesburg High Court.

The unexpected murder of Kirsten Kluyts left the Parkmore community, Sandton and South Africa shaken.

The case will continue at the Alexandra Magistrates Court today (January 19). Stay tuned for updates.

The following is a chronological look at the beginning of the murder case against the suspect who is in custody for killing Kluyts.

October 29 – The body of Kirsten Kluyts was found in George Lea Park, where she was killed while jogging.

November 26 – The 21-year-old suspect, a student in Sandton alleged to have murdered Kluyts, was arrested at a student residence at about 16:00.

November 28 – The suspect made his first appearance at the Alexandra Magistrates’s Court.

December 5 – The suspect returned to court with legal representation. A later court date was set for a bail hearing.

December 10 – National group for women, Catch Me if You Can, concluded their campaign for sixteen days of activism against gender-based violence, women and child abuse which they ran in honour of Kirsten Kluyts.

December 18-19 – The suspect, who faces charges of rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder, appeared in court for a continued bail application bid. The suspect’s application for bail continues.

January 19 – The suspect will appear once more before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court for the first time in the new year of 2024, where the court is expected to hear a continuation of the suspect’s application for bail.
