Sun International in Sandown served as the launching platform for the Safe and Sound: Empowering Girls and Women to Feel Safe booklet launch on December 1.

The booklet is part of the company’s campaign for 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse and focuses on gender-based violence.

The booklet was written by Sun International transformation manager Ashnie Muthusamy, and distributed to the hospitality establishment’s female employees. The aim remains to strengthen the hotel brand’s commitment to the safety and wellness of staff.

Muthusamy described the booklet as carrying a unique approach to dealing with senseless crimes against women.

“There are some GBV crimes that are perpetuated that are more opportunistic in nature, where girls or women become victims of GBV due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Muthusamy said. “The Safe and Sound book is focused on creating awareness of these types of crimes. There is a plethora of information that deals in detail with GBV.”

The prestigious booklet launch event had active Miss South Africa Natasha Joubert as the emcee. It was characterised by a self-defence demonstration by i-LEAD Self-Defence’s Risha Patak-Harie.

Muthusamy, in response to whether the company frequently offered self-defence to employees, said while organisations could offer these skills, self-defence training was a personal choice. It is preferable that employees find trainers who they are comfortable with.

“There are a range of self-defence courses that focus on different levels of intensity and duration. The Safe and Sound book provides practical advice to avoid these encounters rather than to engage in self-defence.”
