National netball players excited about Discovery partnership

Discovery's chief marketing officer, Firoze Bhorat, wants to see the youth of South Africa being more active with netball and show their support during the Netball World Cup 2023.

Leading up to the Netball World Cup 2023 taking place in Cape Town, Discovery proudly announced their partnership with the SPAR Proteas on February 9.

With hundreds of supporters displaying their love for the national netball squad and their coaches, the official announcement was held at Discovery Place in Sandton. On stage was the president of Netball SA, Cecilia Molokwane, Discovery’s chief marketing officer Firoze Bhorat, tournament director of the Netball World Cup Priscilla Masisi and model, Jo-Ann Strauss, who was the master of ceremonies for the event.

“Netball is an incredibly important sport in the context of South Africa. People may not realise it is the number one sport played by women in the country. As such a widely played sport, we hope to contribute to promoting an excellent national team, but critically, of course, in line with our purpose of encouraging people to lead healthier lives, seek to encourage people of all ages to get and stay active,” said Bhorat.

He shared more good news with the participants – Vitality will be sponsoring the 2023 Netball World Cup with the aim of growing the sport within communities and schools.

“Given the inequity of sponsorship in sport, this is a deliberate indication of our support for women in sport. We believe that through the sport of netball we will be able to inspire South African women and girls to live more active, healthier lives by playing the sport they love.”

After the discussions on the main stage, fans were given the opportunity to take selfies with the squad and mascot Letsatsi, who were all in high spirits.

One of the highlights of the event was when the Discovery netball team competed with some of the players of SPAR Proteas in a shooting challenge. To say the least, both teams displayed true greatness on the mini-indoor netball court.

“We are excited to be hosting the netball tournament on African soil for the first time. We urge South Africans from all over to play their part in showing their support toward our girls by purchasing tickets, shirts and by cheering,” said Masisi.

The second phase of the ticket sales commenced on February 10, and Masisi added that they are selling fast.

“We already know our plans and we’ve been training hard for this. Currently what’s keeping us prepared are friendly matches. Being covered holistically as an athlete is something that was missing in women’s sport and to see the closing of the gap is truly uplifting,” said Tumi Mahloko, national netball player.
