Morningside locals speak on how crime has affected them

Faced with multiple crimes in our society, many locals no longer feel safe in their safe spaces.

Crime is the one major problem that South Africans have to deal with. Every day, crime is committed in our areas.

CANDIA ANTONIACUS: The most recent is when I saw someone get shot in front of me while driving; it made me not want to leave my house for days, and a few days after that, our next-door neighbour was broken into. This has made me frightened and worried for our lives as crime keeps increasing.

The Sandton Chronicles hit the streets to ask locals in what ways has crime affected them, and do they think that the police are doing enough to ensure the safety of people?

MICHELLE PAPOUTSIS: I wouldn’t say I have been affected by crime. I can only talk about what I have heard from people and close friends, and that has put me on edge. I have not dealt with the police, but from what I have heard, it sounds as if they are not doing much for the people, and private securities have an upper hand on them.

ANTIGONE ANTONIAOUS: Crime has affected us in our area. Our next-door neighbour was broken into, and that has made us very scared. We are terrified to come back home late at night and I do not think that the police are doing much. I find that they are not present enough in our area.

MIKA BRADSHAN: Crime has affected me quite negatively. I was involved in a house burglary and got tied up – it was quite a traumatic situation, and my family had to move to an estate as we did not feel comfortable in a stand-alone house. Even though the police were proactive, nothing came out of the situation. I hope the police can do more for the people.
