Randburg Magistrate’s Court to proceed with trial of Sandton man who allegedly set his girlfriend on fire

The charges relate to incidents of alleged physical abuse and allegedly setting the complainant on fire.

It has been a long time coming, but the trial date for a man facing seven counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, including allegedly setting his then-girlfriend on fire, has been set down at Randburg Magistrate’s Court from December 6 to 8.

The man, whose name is known to Randburg Sun but will not be published until he has pleaded, has been charged regarding incidents in Kelvin, Sandton from 2016 to 2018.

These included alleged physical abuse as well as dousing his girlfriend in ethanol and setting her on fire.

The trial was set to start in July but it was postponed due to a conflict of interest among parties.

The man had previously appeared in court in April, but the case goes back as far as February, when the complainant first started pushing for trial through her lawyer.

She also applied to cancel the accused’s bail, alleging he had continued to contact and threaten her – which would mean breaking his bail conditions.

Yet, the cancellation of bail was denied as the presiding officer said there was insufficient evidence to warrant the cancellation of bail.
