Residents urged to take precaution as housebreaking and theft out of vehicles remain high in Sandton’s sector one

Sandton Police reamins concerned about the high number of house breakings and theft out of motor vehicle in sector one of the policing precinct.

Cases regarding theft out of motor vehicles and housebreaking remain high in sector one of the Sandton Police Station’s policing precinct.

This was according to Sergeant Trevor Rama at a recent virtual Sandton CPF Sector 1 monthly meeting. Sector 1 includes the suburbs of Edenburg, Gallo Manor, Khyber Rock, Morningside Manor Ext 2, Rivonia, Sunninghill, Woodlands and Woodmead

In the crime statistics shared by Rama, there was a total of seven house breakings reported in August and a further 10 in September.

“Most of these occurred at night when residents are asleep or late at night during load-shedding,” he said.

During the same period, a total of 18 cases of theft out of a motor vehicle were recorded across the sector. Rama noted that many of these incidents record the use of a remote jamming device to gain access to the vehicle.

Car jamming occurs when a criminal uses a signal blocking device that effectively blocks a vehicle from being remotely locked properly. This happens when motorists remotely lock their cars while walking away.

SAPS shares the following safety tips with motorists:

Rama added that common robbery, more specifically cellphone snatching, remains a consistent problem across the sector.

Residents and business owners operating in Sector 1 are encouraged to attend monthly CPF meetings. These meetings provide comprehensive feedback, giving attendees first-hand information about what is happening in their suburb.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to raise any related concerns as members of the SAPS, JMPD and ward councillors are present.
