JRA removes rumble strips on Cumberland Avenue, Bryanston

Motorists can breathe a sigh of relief after the JRA removed the 21 rumble strips on Cumberland Avenue in Bryanston.

Cumberland Avenue in Bryanston has been restored to its original form, minus the 21 below standard rumble strips.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson Mosa Makhalima confirmed that the entity removed the rumble strips on September 25 after it was found that the strips were not in line with its agreed standard.

As previously reported in the Chronicle, Rumble strips end speed, [week ending September 2], the strips were implemented to stop motorists from speeding on the busy residential road.

Residents were however concerned about the height of the strips and the potential damage they could cause. Upon investigation, the JRA moved for a removal.

But without any interventions, how does the JRA plan to deal with speeding motorists?

“Given the gradient and class of road, the JRA is not able to install any traffic calming devices on Cumberland Avenue and the residents’ complaints about the noise generated by rumble strips. “

She concluded that the only alternative at this time would be to request that the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) intervene and address the speeding problem, which is under its mandate.
