Ambassador of Special Olympics South Africa 2022 shares her truth and passion

Upcoming basketball star Christinah Maloka shoots for the stars in her new position as the ambassador for the Special Olympics South Africa and takes the time to encourage others to follow their dreams.

Being told that one will not succeed in life due to their disability can often leave an individual feeling demoralised, but for Christinah Maloka it was the fuel to the drive that she has been looking for.

Currently residing in Mamelodi, Maloka was diagnosed with dyslexia at an early age. The learning disorder affects how an individual reads, writes and also how they verbally communicate. The 19-year-old stated that she continues to face external challenges from individuals who have not been educated on various disabilities.

“I love my community and the school which I am currently in. One of the biggest challenges that I face is hearing and seeing some community members not taking us – people suffering from disabilities – seriously,” said Maloka.

The young athlete shared how she discovered her love through her tough moments of finding herself. “When I started out at Tshegofatsong Special School back in 2016, I was introduced to a lot of physical activities which shaped who I am today. I did everything and loved every sport that I took part in but only one was and is my greatest love – basketball.”

Through her new love, Maloka’s popularity grew extensively and attracted attention from Special Olympics South Africa

“A leadership programme back in 2016 was the first time I got to know about the organisation [Special Olympics South Africa]. I was surprised at how much they cared about us. It’s really hard to find people or organisations that think about others before they think about themselves and the special team are one of them. During our first encounter, they assured us that we can always count on them and so far their actions have been in line with their words. I am grateful for that.”

Six years after both entities joined forces, Maloka’s drive in becoming the female version of her favourite basketball player, Lebron James, was in full motion. Her hard work paid off as she was announced the 2022 ambassador for the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge by the Special Olympics team. With the help of her team, the individual successfully led participants of the challenge to their destinations with ease.

Maloka added some encouraging words for those with disabilities fighting for their voices to be heard.

“Do not listen to the people that mock or disrespect you. You have power; you are valued and you are highly favoured. Please keep on pushing and never by all means give up. I share the words of encouragement which my teachers, family members and the Special Olympics South Africa shared with me – it’s your time to show them who you are and what you can do.”
