Redhill School swimmer set for the big leagues

Redhill School’s Jessica Thompson, who is set to compete in the 8th Fina Junior World Swimming Championships, recently took gold in the South African Short Course Nationals.

Redhill School swimmer Jessica Thompson recently pulled out all the stops in the South African Short Course Nationals, walking away with a gold medal.

Held in Pietermaritzburg, the national competition served as her final preparation gala. In addition to the gold medal finish in the 50m butterfly, Jessica also broke the South African Short Course U15 record for the event.

She also qualified for the finals in all the events that she swam in. This included the 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 100m individual medley.

Since joining Aqua Athlete last year, the young swimmer has continued to work hard alongside her coaches Adrian Goate and Brandon Hattingh.

“Aqua Athlete is immensely proud of Jess’ performance to date and is extremely excited about her future achievements,” said Goate.

Jessica now has her sights set on the 8th Fina Junior World Swimming Championships in Peru from August 30 to September 4. She will be swimming the 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and a relay.

She qualified for the international event at the South African Long Course National in April where she medalled and was ranked the number one swimmer in her age group.
