Local Bryanston teacher takes on Mount Kilimanjaro for animals

Nickaela Hogg, a Michael Mount Waldorf School teacher with Kusudi La, an animal fundraising organisation climb Mount Kilimanjaro for the animals.

As individuals express their different ways of caring for animals, a teacher from the Michael Mount Waldorf School took on the challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro just to display her love for the furry beings.

Nickaela Hogg, who has been a learner and a teacher at Michael Mount, proudly waved her South African flag with joy after reaching the highest mountain in Africa on July 8 with the Kusudi La organisation. The organisation aims at raising funds for the animals through organising various adventures such as hiking.

“I felt on top of the world. Now officially and proudly, I can refer to this highest spot on our continent as Kili. I even had the energy to do a victory jump at the top. It’s a surreal and a fantastic feeling when you fulfill your goal,” said Hogg. According to the newly Kili family recruit, the word Kili can only be said to those who have successfully climbed the mountain.

The nursery school assistant shared a few of her inspirations which ignited her love for the outdoors. “All this started because of my love of the outdoors, exercise and animals. I have hiked around Gauteng with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) group for a while now.

Doing things that I love, while raising money and awareness for animals in need has always been my driving force and passion. My practice hike in the Drakensberg prepared me just in time for the Mount Kilimanjaro, now I can call it Kili.

Hogg expressed that her journey with her team including her expedition leader, Sean Disney, was nothing short of amazing.

“The emotions of the team couldn’t have been more positive. When the universe offers you a life-changing experience, grab it tightly with both hands. I hope my story will inspire someone out there one day. My unadulterated blissful moment was definitely showering.”

As a result of their expedition trip, the Kusudi La team successfully raised enough funds for the Sandton and the Johannesburg SPCAs.
