Police arrest suspect found with an unlicensed firearm in Melrose

A suspect in Melrose was found with a firearm which he told the Norwood police belonged to a friend.

Norwood police arrested a man they found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha reported that on July 30, the police were called to make a formal arrest of the suspect in Melrose.

“The suspect was spotted following a warning made to the public to be on the lookout after an attempted hijacking in Bramley. The local private security officers cornered the suspect and found him in possession of an unlicensed firearm with a [scratched off] serial number,” said Masotsha.

The suspect was asked where he got the firearm from and he said it belonged to his friend who resided in Alexandra.

Masotsha said an investigation was still underway and the man was charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.

“The Norwood SAPS and its management appreciate a friendly working together with our local private security companies who also work their hearts out for the love of the country.”
