Arrest made following R26m Bryanston jewellery heist

Three years following a R26-million jewellery heist at a warehouse in Bryanston, the Hawks’ have reported an arrest.

A 39-year-old arrested in connection with a jewellery heist in Bryanston appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on July 26.

According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo, the accused was reportedly part of a group of armed men who entered the business premises on Ballyclare Drive in August 2019 where they tied up the security guards with cables and broke into the warehouse.

“They stole jewellery worth more than R26 million and fled the scene in their getaway vehicle,” said Nxumalo.

A case of business robbery was opened at the Sandton Police Station but was later referred to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation for further handling.

Nxumalo added that thorough investigation led the Hawks’ team to a township in Soweto were the suspect was arrested.

“He was charged with business robbery and he appeared in court where he was remanded in custody. The investigation is continuing and the arrest of other suspects cannot be ruled out.”

The accused is set to reappear in court in August for the bail application.
