British International Prep learner excels at science expo

British International Preparatory School learner Naveera Chana wins gold at the regional Eskom Science Expo for Young Scientists.

British International Preparatory School learner Naveera Chana recently won gold at the Eskom Science Expo for Young Scientists.

Over 150 inspired young scientists and researches gathered for the Johannesburg regional expo at the Wits University

The expo is aimed at developing young scientists who are able to identify a problem, analyse the information, find solutions and communicate the findings effectively.

Naveera was one of the youngest contestants, with many of the other contestants being in grades 11 and 12.

“We are very proud of Naveera and her commitment, dedication and perseverance when at times it would have been easier to simply quit. She was the youngest gold medal winner,” said her mother Lee.

Contestants were judged on the quality of their research, the format of their report, their presentation, topic, originality and the learner’s ability to answer questions.

“[Naveera] persevered and represented herself and the school with excellence. It would have been easy for her to be intimidated when competing against Grade 12 pupils, especially when presentation and answering unscripted questions were criteria, but Naveera confidently held her own,” said school principal Dr Gareth Thompson.

This regional expo was one of 35 regional expos planned in all nine provinces across South Africa. It was also the first physical Eskom Expo since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
