Giving gogos smiles in Marlboro

The Vuka Skhokho Foundation in Marlboro recently hosted a workshop to show a little love and a lot of appreciation for the gogos in the community.

Did you know that gogos continue to play pivotal roles in not only the lives of their grandchildren but also entire households across the community?

This is according to the Vuka Skhokho Foundation in Marlboro, who together with the Humble Smile Foundation and the City of Johannesburg, hosted a workshop to better equip grandmothers from Marlboro and surrounding communities for their role.

The foundation’s Hansraj Mitha, “In many households in the community, parents have often left their children to be looked after and taken care of by the grandparents. We just want to show appreciation to the gogos and let them know that we see the hard work that they continue to do.”

Special guest Roman Harding from the Humble Smile Foundation shared insights during the workshop about the significance of oral hygiene and importance of a balanced diet for all children. “By the age of six about 67% of children, especially in South Africa, already have cavities and a lot of it is about the bad food that they eat.”

Under its Gogos Give Smiles outreach banner, the Humble Smile Foundation donated eco-friendly toothbrushes to those in attendance.

After the workshop, all of the grandparents and children from the surrounding community were invited for a warm meal.
