Wine maker and consultant Natasha Williams schools participants on wine

Natasha Williams shared that if you want to avoid a headache when drinking wine, it is important to stay hydrated.

As the wine expo at Sandton Convention Centre reached its conclusion on July 9, one of the biggest highlights was when winemaker, Natasha Williams, educate guests on different kinds of wine and food pairings.

The wine enthusiast, who is based in Stellenbosch, has always been driven to master the art of winemaking since she started her tertiary studies. However, the path she chose did not initially have the blessing of her family.

Williams explained how she overcame her biggest obstacle, “I grew up in a household where my mother refused me to study wine because of our family history and the history behind winemaking in my culture. Long story short, I studied wine without their [parents] knowledge and, of course, they were very upset, but it was my destiny and they eventually saw that.”

She shared an interesting myth about wine, “A lot of people think that wine in general gives them headaches, it is both true and false. This happens when there is lack of water in the body so, it is important always keep hydrated with water if you want to avoid headaches when drinking wine.”

Williams described the most suitable way to hold a wine glass, “If you see a wine glass in general, you will see at the top it has a bowl shape, then you get your stem [middle] followed by the base [bottom].

Your thumb and your index finger are suppose to hold the wine glass from the stem, it ensures a good steady grip, especially when swirling the glass to enhance the flavours. When drinking white wine, we want to avoid changing the temperature of the drink so we advise people to refrain from holding the glass directly on the top.”
