Woman’s Warehouse raise funds for women and girls empowerment centre

A foundation aimed to uplift women held its first race event to create awareness regarding a female social injustice matter.

Braving the bitterly cold weather to join a fun run with a purpose, more than 300 men and women gathered at the James and Ethel Park in Birdhaven on July 2.

Woman’s Warehouse, an organisation based in Northriding, held its first 5km and 10km race event aimed at creating awareness around period poverty. Organisers Johannesburg Article Clerks Association, as well as various stakeholders like Ernst & Young Global Limited, Moore, Pannell Kerr Forster International Limited and Investec, hopped onto this purposeful initiative.

All proceeds went towards empowering women and girls from the Vuk’uzenzele Community Centre in Kya Sands.

Woman’s Warehouse director Gin McLellan said, “Period poverty affects over 30% of women and schoolgirls in South Africa and many women are left having to make the choice ‘eat or bleed’ every month.”

She shared the alarming fact that period poverty was not a familiar term in society and many people only learnt about this pandemic upon entering the fun run.

McLellan added that their objective for the event was to highlight the plight of women in South Africa and the power of collaborating with Corporate South Africa to use CSI funds more sustainably by investing in #Period Equality.

“Through donations and entries, over 350 menstrual cups will be distributed to this year’s recipient giving women in this community menstrual freedom for five years.”

McLellan concluded that, as Woman’s Warehouse, they were steadily changing the culture, narrative and language around period poverty and they would not cease until they saw more people talking about #PeriodPower.
