Smells like ‘team’ spirit for the soccer boys of Montrose Primary

Final kick of the match between the soccer boys of Montrose Primary and the teachers ends in victory for the underdogs.

The annual inter-house challenge at Montrose Primary School had everything to offer for both the learners and teachers – blood, sweat, tears and a good ending.

First team soccer players of the school competed against their current arch-rivals, the teachers, on June 23. Learners from all grades came in numbers to show their support, some cheering for their favourite teachers and others supporting their fellow school friends.

Prior to the challenge, learners were reminded by some of their teachers that no first team has ever won a soccer match against the teachers. This only boosted their confidence in winning.

The match went straight into penalties before the confirmation of the winning side.

It seemed that lessons on penalties was the only thing that the teachers forgot to revise as Urav Mukhija’s (learner) final kick led the boys to victory.

Not only did the win give the learners full-on bragging rights, it also landed them in the history book as the first team in over a decade to win against their teachers in soccer. According to the head of boys’ sports and the referee of the match, Mokhosi Makara, the player of the match was none other than the captain of the first team, Imitha Mdaka.
