Residents urged to report illegal dumping

As incidents of illegal dumping seem to be picking up in the Bryanston and Sandton areas, residents are encouraged to report any incidents to the City.

Residents in the Bryanston and Sandton communities are urged to report any incident of illegal dumping to the City.

According to Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford, recent incidents of illegal dumping have taken place in the area surrounding the Bryanston Shopping Centre.

In the week of 16 May, an impromptu site along William Nicol was cleared by a team at Pikitup only for more piles of rubble to appear overnight. Many of these illegal dumping incidents include construction waste and rubble.

“[Illegal dumping] just seems to be picking up in the area again and we need people to have their eyes and ears open, ready to take photos of it if they see anything so that we can report it,” said Shackleford.

She added that it will take the community working together with the City to ensure that the integrity of the community is maintained and impromptu dumping sites are not established overnight.

Pikitup regional manager Mlawuli Dlamini confirmed that the illegal dumping sites brought to the attention of Pikitup have been removed or cleared. He encourages residents to remain proactive and report any illegal dumpers to JMPD, any impromptu dump sites that need clearing must be reported to Pikitup.

Pikitup only attends to illegal dumping on pavements, streets and council-owned land, illegal dumping in parks is the responsibility of City Parks.
