Law firm shares goodness to the Sisterhood Sewing Project

Premi Roopanand of the Sisterhood Sewing Project based in Wendywood rejoices as her project receives donations from a local law firm, Bowmans.

The spirit of ubuntu shone through a generous donation from a Sandton-based law firm on May 31.

The law firm, Bowmans, presented essential sewing items to the representatives of the Sisterhood Sewing Project in Wendywood.

Founder of the community sewing project, Premi Roopanand, was near tears as two members from the law firm, Jay Chetty and Azminah Jhetam, delivered six sewing machines, haberdashery, a steam iron, and a mannequin. Roopanand’s students could not contain their excitement.

The sewing project primarily focuses on helping men and women develop sewing skills. According to Roopanand, the goal of the project is to increase the employment rate in South Africa.

Thina Thoba, a student who has been with the project for three months, expressed her gratitude. “I feel really happy for the donations that the project received from Bowmans.

We did not have a lot of machines to the point where some of us had to carry our own machines from home just to continue with our lessons. We are all excited to see what we will create with them.”

Roopanand observed each donated item with a big smile on her face as she explained how the partnership with the firm began. “Months before, we had an article published by Sandton Chronicle about our project.

It caught the attention of Fatima Laher who is the head of pro bono at Bowmans. She got in contact with me asking what I needed and that was the beginning of a beautiful story. I am truly grateful for Fatima’s team for assisting us with the big donation.”

Laher added, “This outreach forms part of our Women’s Month initiative which will [be observed] in August, with our main focus being the economic empowerment of women.”

Classes are available to the public on Tuesday to Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 12:00.

Details: Premi Roopanand 072 750 0375.
