Redhill’s performing arts star shines at the Naledi Awards

Redhill School’s performing arts prodigy Nicolas Hattingh continues to live out his dream, having recently had the honour to perform at the coveted Naledi Theatre Awards.

Redhill School’s performing arts prodigy Nicolas Hattingh continues to leave audiences stunned with every performance.

The 18-year-old, who recently played a leading role in the school’s successful production Cabaret, had the honour of performing at the Naledi Theatre Awards.

Recognised as a premier awards event on the Gauteng theatre calendar, the awards celebrate all the local theatre industry has to offer.

Nicolas was both grateful and overwhelmed by the opportunity to perform at the coveted awards.

“I was already feeling overwhelmed by the response we were getting from the production and it exceeded my expectations completely , so getting the opportunity to then perform a character that meant so much to me at the event was amazing.”

The Grade 12 learner discovered his love for the theatre and performing at a young age.

“I remember moving to my new school in Australia and signing up to join the hip-hop class, after my first performance I fell in love with being on stage. From then, I joined numerous dance classes and developed my love for the stage throughout the years,” he said.

Nicolas recalled Cabaret as a milestone moment in his life, although he might have not known it in the beginning.

“Funny enough, at the beginning of the audition and rehearsal process I didn’t enjoy my time. But as the production started to come together and the cast started to become friends, I began to enjoy every second. To the point where the longer the rehearsal, the better. I can safely say that by closing night, my life has completely changed.”

According to Redhill School executive head Joseph Gersassi, who directed the school’s production of Cabaret, this young man has all the making of a musical theatre star. Gerassi played a prominent role in Nicolas’ performing journey at Redhill School as both a director and mentor.

“Thank you Lihan Pretorius and the Naledi Awards for giving Nicolas and other young performers the opportunity to share the Naledi stage with professionals, such a special memorable evening.”
