Bryanston resident climbs to new heights

Local climber Lauren Mukheibir looks ahead and she prepares to compete in the World Games in the USA.

Local climber Lauren Mukheibir continues to live out her dream, climbing to new heights as one of the country’s top climbers.

The Bryanston resident will be competing as the only South African female rock climbing athlete in all three climbing disciplines (lead, speed and boulder) in the upcoming World Games in the USA in July.

This follows Mukheibir’s recent performance in the South African National Climbing Federation Championships in Cape Town where she took home the gold for speed.

According to the 21-year-old, climbing has been a great passion of hers from the age of eight.

Apart from finishing climbs, one of the most rewarding things over the years for the climber has been her long-term progress.

“What I have noticed over the past few years with my constant training is that consistency is definitely rewarding.

“You may not see progress from a week to week basis but if you look back a month or more, you are bound to be rewarded for your hard work.”

Through climbing, Mukheibir has learnt a great number of life lessons, including resilience, consistency and patience.

“Patience is the main one because it has taken me 10 to 11 years to be on top form and from now on, it’s onwards and upwards from here.”

She encouraged young potential climbers looking to get into the sport to take on the challenge.
“Don’t take things too seriously or personally and train hard if you want to achieve your goals but most importantly have fun.”

In the meantime, the young athlete continues to train at CityRock Johannesburg in Randburg in preparation for the upcoming international competition.
