World Bipolar Day #BipolarTogether

JOBURG – Dr. Kim Laxton continues to give an insight into what #BipolarDay means.

In light of World Bipolar Day, which is commemorated every year on March 30.

This year’s theme #BipolarTogether is to show support whether helping a loved one with bipolar disorder or simply supporting mental health.

Bipolar disorder, often known as manic depression is a mental illness marked by excessive emotional highs and lows. If left untreated, it can have a substantial influence on a person’s ability to function. Medications, psychotherapy as well as support groups among others can help manage the condition.

Dr Kim Laxton, a psychiatrist in Johannesburg states that manic depression has been used as a clinical diagnosis of bipolar and related disorders that incorporates both ‘poles’ of the mood spectrum. Depression (low mood, fatigue, commonly involving suicidal ideation) and Mania (significantly increased energy, elevated, irritability) are the two poles.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) offers bipolar support groups for individuals living with bipolar disorder, as well as family support groups for those who care for loved ones.

To learn more about Bipolar Disorder, its symptoms, available treatments, potential relapse triggers, and self-help strategies. Join SADAG questions and answer Facebook live chat at 13:00 on April 1 with the psychiatrist, Dr Leverne Mountany.
