Brescia House puts the fun in fundraising

BRYANSTON – A number of Brescia House School staff shaved and donated their hair to make wigs.

The Brescia House School community fully embraced the fun and colour of this year’s Shavathon and Ribbonathon on March 25.

The Shavathon is a fundraising initiative by the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and the Ribbonathon supports the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa.

According to the school’s head of marketing and admissions, Helga Bishop, the learners and teachers showed their support by purchasing ribbons, making donations to non-profits and donating much-needed hair which will be used to make wings.

“Both of these well-regarding NPOs offer very valuable services to members of the wider community in terms of support, care and counselling to individuals suffering from cancer.”

Brescia House School learner Mackenzie Benade, and staff members Martin Perold and Wendy Sauthoff volunteered to shave off and donate their hair.

Sarah Jupp opted to cut and donate her luscious locks for the benefit of those who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatment.

“These staff members and learners showed their support for all those who are dealing with cancer and shared their personal stories and experiences with the school,” said Bishop.

Those who were not in a position to have their hair cut or shaved contributed to the fundraiser by purchasing ribbons that they put in their hair, while others had their hair vibrantly coloured with hairspray.

“We thank all of our parents, learners and staff who so generously and selflessly contribute to this worthy cause every year, and remain ever-mindful of those affected by cancer,’ said Liz Norman, head of counselling and community outreach at Brescia House School.
