Rediscover your local library

SANDTON – The theme for this year’s campaign is Reimagine! Repurpose! Rediscover… Libraries!

Residents are urged to take the opportunity to visit their local public library this South African Library Week (March 14 to 20).

The theme for this year’s campaign, Reimagine! Repurpose! Rediscover… Libraries!, encourages residents to visit their local public library and understand the importance that it plays in a democratic society – advancing literacy and making the basic human right of freedom of access to information a reality.

Under normal circumstances, libraries would host an array of in-person activations to broaden the community’s knowledge of the services offered by the libraries. The Bryanston Library was known for its reading and puppet days while many visited the Sandton Library for its extensive catalogue of books.

However, this year SA Library Week is taking a digital approach by hosting a number of digital programmes that will include storytimes and various panel discussions.

In the meantime, City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services director Nobuntu Mpendulo encouraged residents to visit their local public library and take advantage of the services offered.

“Libraries are community centres, we build relationships with our communities, we develop programmes that focus on community needs, we strive to accommodate all needs within our mandate.

“We, therefore, encourage you to come to our facilities to learn, to socialise, conduct your research, receive training for various digital skills, use quiet spaces to study, get free Wi-Fi and to access a variety of information resources free of charge.”

In addition, the Bryanston Library encouraged locals to return any overdue books during library week. If an overdue book was returned between March 14 and 20, the resident would not be fined.

The Bryanston Library, located at 14 Payne Road, Bryanston, is open on weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00.

The Sandton Library, located at Nelson Mandela Square, is open on weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00.
