Help Woodrock sterilise 500 cats and dogs this month

PARKTOWN NORTH – The drive requires R300 000 and R25 000 has been raised so far.

Woodrock Animal Rescue is launching a drive to sterilise 500 cats and dogs during the month of March.

The drive is premised on the fact that one female dog and her babies can have over 67 000 puppies in a six-year time frame.

The drive, which takes place during Woodrock founder Stella Meldau’s birthday month, aims to reduce these numbers and ensure the quality of life for domestic animals.

While sterilising one dog is just a drop in the ocean, Meldau wants to make an impactful difference in the animal world.

She requires R300 000 to facilitate the drive and has raised R25 000 to date.

“I know that the devoted animal world will help where they can. It’s a massive ask. We ask for R300 per animal (cat/dog) to get us to our goal,” said Meldau.

“I know Woodrock Animal Rescue together with Cause for Paws, Claw [Community Led Animal Welfare] and Gideon Animal Outreach can tap on the shoulders of our followers to achieve this massive number.

“Sterilisation has many benefits including improving the health of your animals, reducing undesirable behaviours, and preventing unwanted animals. First and foremost, sterilising your pet will help them live a longer and healthier life.”

Food hampers will be distributed to families who sterilise their animals as part of the drive.

“It gives us a feeling of caring for all who take pet responsibility seriously. We feel for the humans who take an effort to support our drive.”

She concluded, “Woodrock Animal Rescue base our success on our spirit of giving. When we receive, we share. It is our ethos and goal to include and hold hands with like-minded shelters. There are so many in need. So many needs, so many people trying and standing in unity with us to improve and change the lives of the voiceless.”

Community members are requested to donate food items for the hampers, including small bags of mielie meal, tins of beans, packets of soup, bags of dog or cat food as well as donate financially to the cause. Donations can be brought to the pop-up shops situated at The Garden Shop in Parktown North or Bryanston between 09:00 and 14:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
