Sandton cyclers take victory

SANDTON – The race, which took place on February 13, saw over 2 500 cyclists take part in either the 90km or 50km distances.

Sandton City’s Cycle Nation Elite Women’s Cycle Team took home the phenomenal win at the inaugural Montecasino Classico.

The race, which took place on February 13, saw over 2 500 cyclists take part in either the 90km or 50km distances. The Olympic trio consisting of Cherise Willeit, Carla Oberholzer and Joanna van de Winkel nabbed all three podium spots in the women’s race.

According to Cycle Nation’s Lincoln King, the riders began at Montecasino, the riders ventured through the streets of Fourways and Northriding, into the Cradle of Humankind. The route back ran by the Sterkfontein Caves and back into Fourways, finished at the Montecasino Outdoor Events Arena.

“The Sandton City women’s team made a clean sweep of the podium in the Elite Women’s race with Carla Oberholzer leading her teammate’s home in a winning time of 2h36m for the 90km route.”

The win follows the team’s return from the South African National Road Cycling Champions where Oberholzer was not only crowned national champion in the individual time trial but also picked up a bronze medal in the road race.
