Sandton SPCA vet is ready to help you

MARLBORO – Dr Shira Amar looks forward to streamlining the clinic services, maximising its resources to offer a high standard of primary animal healthcare to the community.

Sandton SPCA’s new clinic veterinarian Dr Shira Amar is ready to offer the community a high standard of primary animal healthcare.

The veterinarian was welcomed by the local welfare organisation at the beginning of January.

Amar has always had a great passion and love for animals, and at the age of five she witnessed her cat Mona-Lisa give birth to her kittens on the kitchen floor of her family home.

“It was incredible to see her natural maternal instinct. My mom even let me come late to nursery school that day so I wouldn’t miss out and I remember being so excited to tell my teachers and classmates all about it.”

This motivated her to pursue a career in veterinary science which had been both fulfilling and challenging.

“Veterinary science encompasses many areas of interest to me including animal welfare, epidemiology and pathology.”

Qualifying in 2018, she did a year of compulsory community service in the Western Cape in 2019 and more recently completed her master’s degree in the field of epidemiology.

Amar said she was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join Sandton SPCA.

“I recognise that many of our clients and patients are reliant on the Sandton SPCA clinic for veterinary care. I am fortunate to have the training to fill this need.”

She looked forward to streamlining the clinic services and maximising its resources to offer a high standard of primary animal healthcare to the community.

“I feel strongly that the education of animal owners is key to ensuring the welfare of animals in the long-term. One of our goals is to promote preventive medicine including annual vaccinations and ongoing worm, tick and flea control.”
