Homeowners must remain vigilant – ADT

BRYANSTON – According to Fidelity ADT, in January there were 18 reported housebreaking cases and 11 armed robberies.

Private security firm Fidelity ADT would like to warn residents of its concerning observation of an increase in housebreakings in the Bryanston area.

According to Josh Nel, Bryanston branch manager, it has noted 29 incidents in January in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg – Bryanston, Sunninghill and Paulshof recorded the highest numbers of housebreakings and armed robberies.

In January there were 18 reported housebreaking cases and 11 armed robberies.

This is a marked increase in comparison to December last year when there were 10 housebreakings and three armed robberies.

Nel added, “Fortunately, these criminals appear to be opportunistic criminals, there for the easy pickings but there is always the worry of personal injury.

“We can see that in a number of instances the gardener will be working outside, they are either forced to open the gate if it is locked or if it not locked, they forcibly gain access.”

Captain Bheki Xulu of the Sandton Police Station noted that while he is not sure how the data was collected and what key areas the private security firm may cover, one housebreaking reported is one too many.

“In January 2022 we had a challenge of house robberies and less than 14 incidents reported all cover the Sandton area,” said Xulu.

Nel added that while security measures like fences, detection beams and closed-circuit television (CCTV) are still key deterrents for criminals, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant at all times.

“The bottom line is you always need to remain vigilant. Act as if you are being watched and take all necessary precautions. Your security starts with having the right security measures around your home.”
