City calls for ward committee nominations

JOBURG – The closing date for nominations is on Friday, February 18 at 16:00.

The City of Johannesburg calls for interested candidates to put their names forward for its new ward committee.

The committee aims to assist ward councillors and the council in achieving its objections for local government and the constitution.

The ward committee will comprise as a ward councillor as the chairperson and 10 members of the community nominated from the following sectors:

· Finance & Economic Development (business, labour & development fForums)

· Community Development 1 (sports & culture, and youth)

· Community Development 2 (women, religious groupings, CBO & NGOs)

· Housing

· Environment

· Development Planning & Urban Management (land Use)

· Transportation

· Health

· Safety

· Infrastructure & Services (all Municipal Services e.g. Roads, Streetlights, water, refuse removal etc.

A person that is elected as a ward committee member must:

· Reside in that particular ward.

· Be registered voter in the particular ward (18 years and above)

· Be a person who, if indebted to the municipality, or is in arrears regarding payments for his /her services account, should upon appointment, make necessary arrangements to his/her obligation.

· Be of sound mind. Persons of unsound mind, who have been declared so, by a court of law, are not eligible for election,

The closing date for nominations is on February 18 at 16:00.

Nomination forms are available from the Ward Governance Offices situated in the region and can also be downloaded from the City of Johannesburg website www.joburg.org.za

Voters wishing to participate must be registered in the ward that they reside, to check and update your voting status, visit the regional IEC office or www.elections.org.za
