A role model for the boys in Alex

HURLINGHAM – John Chauke’s new role will see him be directly involved with families in the community, conducting weekly visits to check in on the well-being of members of the community.

The Rays of Hope Foundation’s newest permanent member John Chauke is eager to hit the ground running.

Chauke is set to take up the position of a gender-based violence field worker and boys support group facilitator, operating through the community of Alexandra.

After temporarily joining the non-profit in 2020 to help with the packing and distribution of food parcels during the peak of the pandemic, Chauke’s determination and passion for helping others earned him a place in the Rays of Hope Yes Internship Programme.

The programme is aimed at providing young people with real-world job experience. “I believe I got this opportunity because I am persevering, hardworking and eager to learn, and I strive to reach my goals,” he said.

Chauke’s new role will see him be directly involved with families in the community, conducting weekly visits to check in on the well-being of members of the community. “I learn a lot about others in this role, which is a big motivator for me. Children need someone to spend time with them and to give them love.”

He is also involved with the education of gender-based violence at schools across the community, playing an active role advocating for the rights of children and families. “All I want to achieve is to build up young boys, and to be an example to them so that they can be great and responsible men in the future.

“My hope for Alexandra is to see brave young people taking big risks to create the futures they deserve, and for better opportunities for the community of Alexandra as a whole.”
