Residents interested in adopting African Grey parrot

The Bryanston Avian, Exotic and Small Animal Clinic is still looking for the owner of an African grey parrot.

The parrot was found on Conduit Street in November last year.

Dr Perushan Yenketsamy from the clinic said nobody has come forward to claim the little bird. She has since been tamed brilliantly and now allows herself to be touched. “We have changed her diet from only seed to a mixture of avian pellets, vegetables, fruit and some human snacks that she is allowed,” he said.

He added that they have a couple of people who are interested in adopting the parrot. “We’ve sent some blood work away to make sure she is free of disease when she is adopted.”
The bird was found in the Johannesburg-North precinct and it seems to speak in a man’s voice and also utters some Zulu words.

It is the case with most pet birds to locate the owner when they (birds) are lost. “Unfortunately, this is the case with most pet birds. Owners do not realise that you can microchip a bird [in the event that it flies away, is found by strangers and taken to a vet].”

He added most vets also do not scan these stray birds for microchips as they do not expect them to have a chip.

“Owners can also clip their bird’s wings preventing them from flying away but not everyone feels this way – some think it’s cruel.”
