Bryanston Country Club reminisces with Selwyn on South Africa history

BRYANSTON – Klass, who is a scriptwriter and a TV presenter, spent most of his life wining and dining with A-list celebrities in Hollywood and worldwide prominent figures such as the likes of Queen Elizabeth II.

Women of the Bryanston Country Club hosted their monthly meeting on November 2 where guest speaker, Selwyn Klass, made a room full of International Women’s Club (IWC) members relive their golden memories from the past.

Scriptwriter and TV presenter Klass spent most of his life wining and dining with A-list celebrities in Hollywood and worldwide prominent figures such as the likes of Queen Elizabeth II with whom he had the honour of talking and presenting his film work with. Princess Elizabeth, at that time, travelled to South Africa with her family in 1974. The focus of the royal tour in South Africa was to connect with the people from her nation and with the country during the Commonwealth celebration.

“Thinking back, my life seems almost cinematic in context. The stuff dreams are made of. [I was] based in Hollywood, attended the academy awards and met legendary stars. [I asked] ‘looking at you’ Miss Ingrid Bergman [who played the iconic role in Casablanca], is it still the same old story? A fight for love and glory,” said Klass shared.

Helen Langridge, the president of the IWC at Bryanston Country Club, shared a few inspiring words with Klass on stage and looks forward to having more guests who value life and history like him.

“The first Tuesday of every month we all meet here and engage with our guest speakers. It is a friendship club. It started off when people came from other countries. The wives were often left with nothing to do at their homes. That’s how the club began,” Langridge said.

“It was very nice and nostalgic. The video that he [Klass] showed us just goes to show how long ago it was and for some of us, we can still remember that. Sharing and relating to memories is always a wonderful time.”

The country club concluded the event by honouring some of its key members with gifts for their birthday month which resulted to a couple of heartfelt moments where no eyes were dry.
