Birds shot with pellet guns concern Lombardy East resident

LOMBARDY EAST – A Lombardy East resident has expressed concern after finding numerous dead birds on their property.

A Lombardy East resident has reported finding several dead birds on their property, which they believe have been shot by a pellet gun, due to the nature of the birds’ wounds.

The resident reported that different birds had been found dead on their property in recent months, among these doves, pigeons, a crow and a hadeda.

Their concern was that the birds were being shot as a sport or hobby, or even as food.

Stephen Maila, senior inspector for the Sandton SPCA said, “It is a contravention of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 for any person to lay any trap or other device for the purpose of capturing or destroying any animal, wild animal or wild bird. If the destruction is not proved to be necessary for the protection of property or for the prevention of, or spread of disease, then using such methods to kill an animal or bird is unlawful.”

He has encouraged anyone who witnesses incidents like these or finds dead birds on their property which they suspect have been shot, to contact Sandton SPCA on 011 444 7730 (during the week) or 082 460 2765 (after hours).
