Using fashion to raise breast cancer awareness

SANDTON – It is estimated that one in every 29 South African women will contract breast cancer.

While all eyes were on the runway at this year’s African Fashion International Week, Chislehurston-based organisation, Motsepe Foundation, used the opportunity to shine a spotlight on breast cancer.

Through its Design for Life breast cancer campaign with African Fashion International, Motsepe Foundation donated R1 million to the Cancer Association of South Africa at the opening of the fashion week on October 28 at Leonardo Hotel in Sandton.

The campaign makes use of fashion as a communication tool to promote, produce and sell merchandise aimed at raising awareness on women’s health concerns such as breast cancer.

According to Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, co-founder of Motsepe Foundation and chief executive of African Fashion International, breast cancer and cervical cancer education is important to curb unnecessary suffering and loss of life.

“Every woman should take charge of their own health and should have access to information, screening and treatment,” said Moloi-Motsepe at the handover.

The National Cancer Registry has noted breast and cervical cancer are among the top five cancers affecting women in South Africa.
