Ways to help identify a bully

These actions have led to an increase in learners participating in school fights, substance abuse and the drastic change in behaviour

World Bullying Prevention Month is a platform where people and institutions address the issue of bullying within institutions in hopes to eradicate the inhuman behaviour.

Bullying has been an unhealthy trait in many schools since the beginning of time. These actions have led to an increase in victims participating in school fights and substance abuse, and having a drastic change in behaviour. Many victims often feel alone and scared, and helpless to report the bullies who have been inflicting emotional and physical harm on them.

There are no rigorous ways to identify a bully through physical appearance but observing key characteristics and mannerisms can often help track or narrow down the culprits. This is where third parties such as parents, teachers and mentors can help.

Characteristics of bullies

Entitlement: Learners in this category strongly feel that they are above the law. They usually come from prominent family backgrounds and display their true characteristics to the people that they view as lower class.

Outbursts of anger: Learners who manipulate people through their emotions. People who fall under this category do not know how to fully control their emotions.

The popular and charming: These learners are seen as the last people who would commit such heinous acts to their fellow classmates as they are seen as nice and well-mannered through the eyes of authority but project an entirely different behaviour when they are around other children. Often use other learners to carry out their dirty duties.
