Morningside pavement mystery

MORNINGSIDE – The matter has been reported to the City on number occasions but no response or feedback has been provided to date (October 29).

The mystery of the dug-up trenches in Summit Road, Morningside continues.

On the week of September 20 a handful of residents came home to find that not only had their pavements been dug up, but their driveways too.

According to resident Claire Jackson-Bernardo on Twitter, the matter was reported to the City on number occasions but no response or feedback has been provided to date (October 29).

“The trenches are getting deeper and harder to drive over,” said Jackson-Bernardo.

She added that due to the continued rain, the trenches have only deepened, creating a great safety risk.

“Our own team now [has] to repair after the trenches [that] were just dug up and abandoned over three weeks ago,” she said on October 8.

While various attempts were made to contact the then-councillor for Ward 103 Vincent Earp, no response was made available at the time of publication.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson Mosa Makhalima, however, said that the department itself was still in the process of finding out what transpired on Summit Road. “According to the JRA depot, there is a possibility that the digging was done illegally by people who were or wanted to steal the cables.

“The depot is still waiting for City Power to confirm if the cables belong to them and when they will be repaired or restored.”

Makhalima added that only thereafter will JRA be able to do a reinstatement of the pavement.
