An app to root out the bullies

BRYANSTON – Deputy principal of Bryanston High School, Andy Crighton, has seen how effective the app has been in his school since its initial release in 2018.

The actions of bullying another human being can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

Not many are capable of standing up to their bullies face to face, but an innovative phone application known as FaceUp has given many learners and employees a platform to voice their concerns about bullying anonymously, without the worry of confrontation.

Deputy principal of Bryanston High School, Andy Crighton, has seen how effective the app has been in his school since its introduction in 2018. He said the system was frequently monitored by the counsellor of the school and key senior staff members who check up on reports of bullying.

Crighton explained how the application worked when learners reported an incident of bullying that might be of harm to them or to others.

“When a report is logged, students get a case ID number that they can use to login later and see if their report has been followed up. “There is a chat feature that’s built into the app, so that staff can message the student or the student can chat to us. We use the chat feature to ask for more information, give them advice or let them know that the incident has been resolved.

“The app is not only for bullying incidents. Students can report anything to us using the app,” concluded the deputy principal.
