Rotary Sandton joins literacy drive

SANDTON – According to Rotary Sandton president Kabelo Kgodane, basic education and literacy is one of rotary’s six areas of focus.

The Rotary Club of Sandton recently partnered with the Yolanda Cuba Foundation to encourage children to take an interest in reading.

Through its Brighter Lives Book Drive, championed by Yolanda Cuba’s two children Lilibo and Limile Mtyi, the foundation supports 44 orphanages and early childhood development centres across the country.

The pair called on as many children as possible to sign up and join them on this initiative by donating 10 books to one of the centres, encouraging them to support the same centre by donating one book a month for the next 12 months.

Sandton’s very own rotary club heeded the call, proudly signing up three children – Olwethu Makunyane, Lethabo Makunyane and Katlego Makunyane – and their parents to join the initiative.

According to Rotary Sandton president Kabelo Kgodane, basic education and literacy is one of rotary’s six areas of focus. “We know that basic education and literacy are essential for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace.

“When Yolanda Cuba and her brilliant young project managers Lilibo and Limile approached us with this initiative, we knew that it was a match made in heaven and we were excited to have our three young friends of rotary, Olwethu, Lethabo and Katlego, and their parents join as well.”

Kgodane added that in today’s technological age, literacy is even more important as it serves as a gateway to using information and communication technologies to constantly learn and adapt to the many different areas of life and solve life problems.

“The Rotary Club of Sandton believes that tackling this problem by starting with the youth (mainly generation Z or digital natives) really gives them a fighting chance to be part of Africa’s digital future and that our efforts will help reduce poverty, improve health, encourage community and economic development and promote peace.”
