Fidelity ADT encourages all residents to keep their personal safety in mind when casting their votes in this year’s municipal election on November 1.

According to head of marketing and communications Charnel Hattingh, even though most voting stations are located at schools and community centres and voters may be walking a few 100m down the road, personal safety remains important.

“Make sure your doors and windows are closed and locked properly, and arm your security system before you leave,” she said.

Hattingh also recommended leaving any flashy jewellery or other expensive electronic devices or assets at home.

“Remember to take your ID card or other documents that the IEC may require from you in order to cast your vote,” she said.

Ensure that your car is securely locked before you walk away and do not leave any valuable items in your car.

The SAPS will be present at all voting stations, and Hattingh recommended you ask for their help if there was anything or anyone that made you feel uncomfortable or suspicious on the day.

Various private security companies will also be on duty to patrol streets and suburbs.

“Be attentive to your surroundings when you make your way to the polling booth as well as on the way back home.”
