Service delivery drive touches down in Sandton

SANDTON – Executive Mayor Mpho Moerane, who was the former MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Services, reaffirmed his commitment to service delivery throughout the city when he was elected on October 1.

The City of Johannesburg mayoral committee got their hands dirty as the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme made a stop in Region E.

Executive Mayor Mpho Moerane and a number of MMCs visited wards 106, 108 and 109 on October 22 to profile basic service delivery challenges and coordinate integrated and multi-disciplinary operations for more effectiveness and impact on the ground.

The programme started with the removal of a trailer parked on a property in Hollyhock Crescent in Marlboro Gardens. The property itself had various infringements – illegally erected informal structures, illegal electricity connections and alleged illegal immigrants. “Cleaning the city requires us to remove illegal structures which pose a threat to the security of its environment,” said Moerane.

The group continued into Marlboro Gardens, 5th Street and Zinna Drive in particular, where littering and dumping have caused drain blockages.

According to Ward 109 councillor Liaquad Ebrahim, Zinna Drive has needed the City’s attention and intervention for years. “There are blockages, dumping, dozens of potholes and the street lights are not working – the residents are frustrated and we need a change.”

Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana also took the mayoral committee under the 12th Avenue bridge in Bryanston, an area known to the community for being a hotspot for littering and displaced people.

Moerane claimed that there are areas where the City is failing municipal residents. “We [the mayoral committee] believe that we can and need to do more to make sure that we give the residents of Johannesburg what they expect from us.”
