Help curb illegal connections in your community

JOBURG – Residents are encouraged to report illegal connections in their community by calling 0800 002 587.

Did you know that illegal power connections are one of the main reasons contributing to constant power outages across the city?

This is according to power utility City Power in its drive to encourage residents to actively report illegal connections in their community.

“Illegal connections are unfair for all paying residents whose power is constantly interrupted because of non-payers who overload the system and cause it to crash,” said the utility in a statement.

Illegal power connections can also cause overloading on mini-substations and the exploding of pole mounted transformers.

City Power noted that is loses more than R2-billion each year in ‘non-technical losses’, which includes illegal connections in suburbs and informal settlements.

“People who connect to the power grid illegally are stealing from the City of Johannesburg.

“Their actions are unsafe, dangerous and can lead to death. If caught, they face huge fines and jail.”

Residents are encouraged to report illegal connections in their community by calling 0800 002 587.

All reports are anonymous.
