Mighty Mack finds her match

SANDTON – The family hopes that people will still continue to register as bone marrow donors so that the prayers of so many other families can be answered too.

The light shines bright at the end of the tunnel for nine-month-old Mackenzie ‘Mighty Mack’ Friedman.

Mackenzie’s mother Megan Harrington-Johnson recently confirmed that her brave daughter, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia earlier this year, has found a bone marrow transplant match.

“This is the best possible news we ever could receive, we are beyond thrilled that she has found her match,” said Harrington-Johnnson.

She added the family truly hoped that people would still continue to register as bone marrow donors so that the prayers of so many other families could be answered too.

“We just hope more people continue to sign up as marrow donors so that they can continue to give other people with blood cancers a second chance at life.”

Mackenzie was admitted to hospital on Mother’s Day this year with a high temperature and tests revealed cancerous cells were affecting her bone marrow and blood.

She was shortly thereafter transferred to Wits Donald Gordon Hospital in Parktown where she underwent chemotherapy, blood and platelet transfusions, and a number of operations.

Would you like to register to be a bone barrow donor? People between the ages of 16 and 45 can log onto www.sabmr.co.za and answer a short health questionnaire to assess their eligibility.

You will be required to give a cheek swab either at a depot or at home to be registered.

Locals can also visit DKMS Africa, formerly known as Sunflower Foundation, to do a walk-in swab test on Republic Road, Randburg.

Residents can alternatively register on their website on www.dkms-africa.org
