Redhill archer achieves provincial colours

MORNINGSIDE – Jess Stutchbury began her journey with archery, shooting her first arrow, at the age of seven.

No one can stop Redhill School’s all-star archer Jess Stutchbury.

The 15-year-old recently achieved north Gauteng provincial colours in archery for a third consecutive year in the open (grades 8 to 12) category.

Jess began her journey in archery, shooting her first arrow at the age of seven and before you knew it, she was taking lessons and shooting bullseyes and 3D archery by the age of 10.

She has also been competing in the National Archery in the Schools Programme, an affiliated body governing the sport worldwide, for the past six years.

There are more than 200 schools, clubs and branches from all provinces participating in the programme.

“It truly has been an amazing experience ever since, from the training, to provincial competitions, to nationals and eventually to international competitions [including Skype competitions with Canada and the USA] just before I turned 11,” said Jess.

Prior to moving to South Africa, Jess was also selected to shoot for the Zimbabwean national team from 2015 to 2017.

“Archery is a fascinating sport in the sense that you are competing both for yourself as an individual, and for your team, and I feel extremely lucky to have met the people I have along the way.

“I have learnt so much about dedication, commitment, grit and teamwork throughout this journey.”

Redhill School executive head Joseph Gerassi congratulated Jess who, at such a young age, had achieved so much.

“Jessica’s natural talent, combined with her fierce determination and commitment, has made her a force to be reckoned with,” said Gerassi.
