Sandton SPCA hosted a rabies vaccination outreach in Alexandra on September 27.
This was to honour World Rabies Day on September 28.
Rabies is fatal for both humans and animals. The only way to control rabies is to ensure that animals are vaccinated and the best way to manage. Puppies under three months cannot be vaccinated as they are too young but they did receive tick and flea treatment.
Wilna Lamb from the SPCA said, ” We managed to vaccinate 227 dogs and three cats. There is a great need in this area and we assured the community that they will be able to visit our clinic during this week for a free vaccination for their pet.”
During an outreach such as this the Sandton SPCA also ensures that the community is educated on the importance of sterilisation, tick and flea treatment and the humane treatment of animals.
A big part of the education in the community is the importance of the Five Freedoms:
1. Freedom from hunger and thirst –by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.
2. Freedom from discomfort – by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease – by prevention and by rapid diagnosis and treatment.
4. Freedom to express normal behaviour – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
5. Freedom from fear and distress –by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
