Local celebs take the plunge for a good cause
BRYANSTON – High-profile guests included ambassador of the United Arab Emirates, His Excellency Mahash Saeed Alhameli and the MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture in Gauteng Mbali Hlope.
It was a day of excitement, comradery and ice-cold water as Special Olympics South Africa (Sosa) kicked off the 5th annual Polar Plunge.
Despite the cold weather and more than five tons of ice added to the pool, more than 150 local celebrities took the plunge in support of this year’s Special Olympics team.
According to Dr Mathews Phosa, chairperson of Sosa, the support for the national team and this year’s plunge was phenomenal.
“People living with an intellectual disability in South Africa are marginalised and neglected. |It is so important to see powerful young people who have a voice showing their support,” said Phosa.
High-profile guests included ambassador of the United Arab Emirates, His Excellency Mahash Saeed Alhameli and the MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture in Gauteng, Mbali Hlope.
The event was hosted by media personality and Sosa ambassador Kim Jayde Robinson for a fourth consecutive year.
“It gives me so much pride to be an ambassador for Special Olympics South Africa, and to host this special event every year, a one-of-a kind on our calendar,” said Robinson.
About R150 000 was raised on the day to support the Sosa team who will be compete in the 2021 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Kazan. Russia.
