Suspected fraudster arrested in Sandton

SANDTON – Station Commander of Sandton Police Station, Brigadier Egen Moodley, applauded the arrest of the suspect and a job well done by the police.

A 37-year-old man was recently arrested in Sandton for a number of fraud cases.

According to Sandton Police Station spokesperson Captain Bheki Xulu, the suspect allegedly visited several businesses in the area posing as a supplier of personal protective equipment.

“On March 4, 2020, [a] complainant met with the suspect on the corner of Witkoppen and Rivonia roads in Paulshof for a deal to supply her with nitrite gloves.

“The deal was signed [and] R177 600 was transferred to the suspect’s account.”

However, the complainant did not hear from the suspect thereafter and no equipment was delivered.

Another incident occurred on January 27 this year whereby the suspect proposed a deal with a second complainant in Eastgate for 2 020 boxes of medtex gloves. “An amount of R91 900 was transferred to his [the suspect’s] account but only half of the equipment was delivered. The suspect disappeared, nowhere to be found,” said Xulu.

A third incident was reported in Woodmead on January 31 last year where the same method was used and R11 900 was taken.

Xulu said that the investigating team worked tirelessly to find the suspect as more businesses may fall for the same scam as Covid-19 runs rapid.

Sandton Police Station Commander, Brigadier Egen Moodley, applauded the arrest of the suspect and a job well done by the police.

All businesses and members of the general public are encouraged to remain vigilant and verify all information before making any business deals.

Criminal and suspicious activity can be reported to Crimestop on 08600 10111 or the Sandton Police Station on 011 722 4200.
